A Higher Standard for Ourselves

The Talmud (Ketuvot 17a) teaches that a person must do his best to understand the needs of others. Yet, for himself, a person should have as few needs as possible. He should shy away from honor, but bestow honor upon others. One should forego personal pleasure, trust that “God will provide” for financial needs and not worry. One should go out of his way to prevent other people from loss. One should try never to borrow, but should lend money freely. One should try never to accept charity, but should generously give as much charity as possible.
